Where Did Those Wrinkles Come From? Let’s Talk About JUVÉDERM!

Have you looked in the mirror lately and wondered, “where did those wrinkles come from?” Or maybe you’ve been watching them advance slowly across your face and deepen over time? Aging happens. You can’t stop it.

So, let’s take a minute to look more in-depth into filler treatments you have probably heard about, JUVÉDERM.

As you age, you lose hyaluronic acid and collagen. Their depletion causes your skin to lose structure and volume.

These effects are most easily seen in the fat pads on your face. Have you ever noticed how an older person’s cheeks look hollow or appear less supple?

You’re seeing the effects of hyaluronic and collagen loss. These components of the aging process also contribute to the formation of wrinkles and folds in your skin.

JUVÉDERM is a family of injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

JUVÉDERM is also used to correct nasolabial folds, which are lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth and for lip augmentation.

The members of the JUVÉDERM family include:

  • Voluma XC adds volume beneath the skin’s surface to increase the size of the cheeks.
  • XC and JUVÉDERM Vollure XC address the loss of skin elasticity and fill out wrinkles and lines around the mouth and nose, also known as smile lines.
  • Ultra XC and JUVÉDERM Volbella XC work as nonsurgical lip enhancement treatments.

JUVÉDERM contains hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. This acid stimulates the production of the connective tissue that plumps the skin (remember that collagen we talked about earlier?).

When injected, hyaluronic acid acts as a cushioning agent by holding water in at the injection site, which adds volume and a smoother appearance to the skin.

How Do I Get It Done?

During the procedure, your provider will use a pen to mark the areas to be treated. Your provider will inject JUVÉDERM into the targeted area and lightly massage the area to evenly distribute the filler and reduce the chance of swelling.

Depending on the area or areas treated, the entire procedure will likely take 15- 60 minutes.

It’s an Injectable. Is It Going to Hurt?

The injections contain a small amount of lidocaine. Lidocaine minimizes any pain or discomfort you may feel during treatment.

Your provider may even numb the target area before the procedure if necessary. If you have concerns, discuss your options with your provider before you get down to business.

Do I Need to Do Something to Prepare for the Treatment?

JUVÉDERM procedures are minimally invasive and don’t need much preparation. Because of this, they are frequently done on the same day as the consultation.

To help prevent bruising:

  • In the weeks leading up to treatment, avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Smoking is discouraged before treatment.
  • Just before your consultation and treatment, avoid medication like aspirin, ibuprofen, and St. John’s Wort.

I Don’t Have a Lot of Recovery Time. What Are the After-Effects of the Treatment?

Recovery time is quick. You will be advised to avoid strenuous activity, sun exposure, wearing makeup, and consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

Depending on which product from the JUVÉDERM family was used, results typically last between six months and two years.

What Do I Need to Know About Side Effects?

Expect some swelling and bruising. Other common side effects include:

  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Minor pain
  • Itching

These side effects usually subside within two to four weeks. Occasionally more severe side effects, typically associated with unprofessional handling, can occur.

These more severe complications include:

  • Permanent scarring
  • Vision abnormalities
  • Blindness
  • Stroke

Choose your provider wisely. Confirm they are:

  • Trained
  • Certified
  • Licensed to perform the procedure

Can Anyone Use It?

JUVÉDERM injectable gel should not be used by people who have severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or a history or presence of multiple severe allergies.

People should not use JUVÉDERM if they have a:

  • A history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins.
  • A history of allergies to lidocaine.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

JUVÉDERM should only be administered under the supervision of a licensed health care practitioner. Inform your provider if you use substances that may prolong bleeding or bruising, such as aspirin, or ibuprofen, or naproxen.

If you are planning on getting laser treatment, chemical peeling, or any other dermal procedure after your JUVÉDERM treatment, inflammation may occur at the treatment site.

If you are on immunosuppressive therapy, there is a possibility of increased infection risk. Safety for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding, or patients under 18 years has not been established.

Safety in patients with excessive scarring (e.g., hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.

What’s the Financial Investment?

The syringe usually prices JUVÉDERM. Filling out the nasolabial folds will often take one or two syringes, which range from $500 to $750 per syringe.

Is JUVÉDERM the Same as Botox?

Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM are different from neuromodulators like Botox. Makers formulate these differently, and so they address different types of wrinkles.

Dermal fillers address static wrinkles and lines. These are the kind that form due to:

  • Aging
  • Sun exposure
  • Loss of skin volume
  • And more

Neuromodulators like Botox correct dynamic wrinkles, which are the wrinkles that develop as a result of making various facial expressions every day.
